Pros and cons at a glance

Let’s jump into the best and worst the Netgear AC1750 has to offer. There are some variations in the experiences people seem to have, but overall, the experience with the Netgear Nighthawk AC1750 is pretty consistent, giving us the confidence that this review is reliable, and will be useful for our readers.

The plus-side

We love the sleek design of the Netgear AC1750. It’s fingerprint resistant, and impressively, is also easy to dust off. It won’t heat up while being stored in a corner and end up with sticky dust that’s hard to clean. It’s made from a semi-gloss black plastic with an angled design, vent ports on either side and three antennas. The aesthetic clean and balanced.

The connectors and buttons are all hidden on the back of the device except for the USB 3.0 port which is thoughtfully and conveniently located at the front of the router to make it easier to plug in a flash drive or external hard drive. The hard drive can then be shared by all devices on the network, which is an especially useful feature. Also, the indicator lights are on the front and are easy to see and read.

The installation process is simple, and it’s easy to follow the brief, enclosed instructions. Since the user only needs to plug in two cables and power the device on, it’s nearly fool-proof. The rest is set-up from the computer. The default network name and WiFi password are printed on the bottom of the device, so new users aren’t sifting through directions and unboxing trash to find a tiny tag with the info.

Speed testing shows this router really is as fast as it claims. The download speeds were everything Netgear promises, which is to say it really is a good fit for gamers and those who want to stream high-res videos.

The range is exceptional because of Netgear’s exclusive Beamforming+ technology. For those with a basement, multiple levels, and a desire to stream in the far reaches of their backyard with no dead zones, this router is the best fit. Users will save money when they realize they really don’t need to purchase a WiFi extender.

The downside

This is not a small hideaway device. It’s significantly larger than any of the entry-level WiFi routers. This is the kind of device a user will need to plan on putting somewhere, rather than just stashing it in the corner. It does have wall-mounts for those who like their devices to be kept out of the way, but don’t have a roomy shelf.

It does seem that there can be some slowdowns over time that require the user to restart the router. While this may be a good idea to do on occasion anyway, some reports are indicating they need to restart the router to boost its performance as often as daily. Luckily, the Netgear Nighthawk AC1750 has a power button on the back of the device.

This is unusual for routers, but it may be useful for two reasons. First, if slowdowns become a consistent problem for someone, it’s convenient to have a power button available. Second, it can be a good idea for security purposes, to turn off the router when users leave for long periods of time on business or vacation. The power button just adds a little extra ease of use.

We didn’t contact customer support, but there is a 90-day technical support feature for those who purchase this device from an authorized dealer. This is one of the only points where users offer mixed reviews of their customer experience with tech support. It may not deter someone from making the purchase, but they may want to be aware of the likelihood that the experience may be inconsistent.

In summary…

There are very few downsides to this router. The few items that made us take pause had a built-in feature that made it easier to work with. For example, it’s large but offers a little flexibility in placement by having mounting capabilities built-in. It may turn out that it needs to be restarted periodically to combat slowdowns, but it comes with a convenient power button. That may not fix the problem, but it offers just a little convenience.

The pros are by far a laundry list of everything many users could wish for. The features list is long, and it seems to have extras built in that will impress just about anyone. Ultimately the Netgear Nighthawk AC1750 router lives up to its promise that it will provide speed capable of managing multiple devices, gaming, and streaming. And the range is unprecedented, crushing dead zone concerns and reaching throughout a large home and into the surrounding areas without the need for a WiFi extender.

This router really is the way of the future for all routers. For those who want performance, stay ahead of the game and go with the best router on the market – the Netgear Nighthawk AC1750.
