How to Make a Delicious Michelada

If you like to entertain guests at dinner parties and barbeques, and love to offer a wide variety of cocktails; you will definitely want to add a Michelada to your drink menu. Guests will enjoy watching you pull together this tasty beverage, which originated in Mexico and Latin America and has become widely popular in North America today.

What is a Michelada?

A Michelada is a spicy beer-and-lime cocktail served on the rocks with a salted rim. It’s like a Bloody Mary with a Mexican twist. Much like American’s use of Bloody Marys, the Michelada is said to be a remedy for a hangover. This beverage is a bit on the spicy side, with lime, sauces and other flavors that give it a bold and unforgettable flavor. Not all Micheladas are made the same, and if you look, you will find many variations. Here is a traditional recipe, that shows you step by step, how to make a delicious Michelada:

  • 12 ounce (can or bottle) Mexican beer
  • 1 ounce of lime juice
  • 2-3 dashes hot sauce
  • 3 dashes soy sauce
  • 2 dashes of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 lime for garnishing
  • 2 dashes of black pepper
  • Bar salt for the rim

How to Make a Delicious Michelada

  1. Start by cutting your lime. Slice it lengthwise into small sections or wedges. They don’t have to be pretty. Set aside for later.
  2. After you have cut your lime, you will want to prepare your glass. Grab your pilsner or pint glass and one of the lime wedges. Rub the lime wedge around the rim of your glass. Now you can roll the rim in your bar salt. If you want to kick it up a notch, you can make a mixture of chili powder and salt to create a spicy rim. You can also omit the salt rim and add a pinch of salt to the Michelada instead.
  3. After you have given your glass a salted rim, you need to fill it up about halfway with ice cubes. Don’t use a chilled glass as this will take away from the flavor of the Michelada when the spices stick to the sides of your frothy glass.
  4. Now it’s time to add the lime juice. Pour the lime juice over the ice in your prepared glass.
  5. Next, you need to add the black pepper, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce. Remember less is more. You can adjust the taste of your Michelada by adding more if you need to. If you want to take the heat down a notch, you can add a splash of tomato or Clamato juice to taste.
  6. Give the mixture a little stir to make sure it incorporated well. You won’t want all of the flavor sitting on the bottom.
  7. Now it’s time to add the beer. Choosing the right Mexican beer can make or break a Michelada recipe. You may automatically think, Corona. Not so fast, there are plenty of other Mexican beers that will give your Michelada the best flavor. Try Modelo or Tecate instead of Corona, and you will get a traditional-tasting Michelada. Pour in the beer of your choice but make sure to steer clear of the salty rim, which can cause foaming.
  8. You can garnish your glass with a lime wedge, or you can squeeze the juice of the lime wedge directly into your glass then toss it in. This will add a little extra flavor and helps get rid of the extra lime slices without wasting them.
