We spoke with the Lawrence Dorman, the Executive Vice President of Marketing and Operations to get some insight into CARCHEX’s philosophy regarding employees.

ThoroughlyReviewed: Lawrence, how did the employee wellness and fitness program come into place?
Lawrence: Health and Wellness is an important element of the culture at CARCHEX. About three years ago when we began planning our current Hunt Valley location we allocated space for a large fitness room. Our new space allowed for an onsite gym large enough to hold yoga and fitness classes which we provide free of charge for our employees. Our in-house Director of Wellness has grown our Wellness program to include weekly massages, healthy vending options and meal plans in addition to our Yoga and Fitness classes. Since implementing our wellness program, we have expanded our fitness classes from two sessions per week to three classes a day for the entire work week. The program continues to grow, as we have recently added both company-wide weight loss and Fitbit challenges. We are committed to further expanding the program over the next few years will implement additional ways to challenge our employees to living a healthier lifestyle.
ThoroughlyReviewed: What type of impact has this had on employees and the company overall?
Lawrence: Employees have seen tremendous results from our wellness program. Feeling better about themselves, being more energized throughout the work day and overall being healthier are just a few benefits of our wellness program. Through our weight loss challenges, employees have exceeded their weight loss goals. The results of these challenges truly impact our employees, as many now continue on their road to a healthier more active lifestyle and maintain their higher energy levels. All of this results in better performance throughout the work day. Not only has our wellness program impacted our employees, but it also has shown a positive impact on our company as a whole. We are actively hiring Inside Sales Representatives, our wellness program attracts these potential new hires, as it’s a great and unique benefit to working here at CARCHEX.
As a result of our wellness program, CARCHEX has been named one of Baltimore’s Healthiest Companies in both 2015 and 2016 by SmartCEO. We are very proud of this award, and will continue to support, guide and encourage our employees to live a healthy and active lifestyle.
ThoroughlyReviewed: What is your favorite aspect about working at CARCHEX?
Lawrence: Playing an active role in the growth of CARCHEX over the past 12 years has been extremely satisfying. We were recently included in this year’s Inc 5000 List; this will be the 6th time we have made the list. CARCHEX has received numerous awards over the years, these acknowledgements are something I am most proud as they are reflection of the company culture. Our culture is open, honest and eager to hear new ideas from everyone in the organization.
ThoroughlyReviewed: What’s your favorite activity outside of work?
Lawrence: Outside of work I enjoy being with my wife and children. I’m heavily into crossfit and I’m an avid runner. Of course I can’t leave out the Baltimore Ravens; in my house we bleed purple and black!
