3 Tips on How to Unclog Your Kitchen Sink



Trying to use a clogged kitchen sink can be one of the most annoying things to deal with when working in your kitchen. However it’s one that you can easily avoid. A clogged kitchen sink blocks the free flow of water and interferes with proper drainage. Consequently, you will have to deal with accumulating waste water as you try to wash your utensils and other tasks in your kitchen. Many will say that this is an experience you will want to avoid at all costs. It is therefore important to understand how to go about unclogging your kitchen sink. In this guide, we cover a few tricks that will enable you to unclog that sink and allow you to get rid of wastewater that might have accumulated.

1. Baking soda and vinegar

It is important first to appreciate the fact that a clogged kitchen sink is often caused by the accumulation of small food particles that get into your pipes and block water from passing through. Knowing that particles are clogging your sink means that it is important to have an effective solution that will get rid of the particles.

Many of you might not know this, but baking soda combined with vinegar is an effective way of getting rid of accumulated food particles that clog your sink. All you need to do is simply pour some baking soda down the sink, followed by vinegar, and let the mixture dissolve for a couple of hours. Afterwards, open your tap, and you will notice that the water will now flow freely down the drain unhindered. This works because the baking soda and vinegar combine to form a strongly acidic solution that reacts with the decomposing food particles. It breaks them down, allowing the finer mixture to be washed down the drain once you turn on the water.

2. Use Your Plunger

An effective solution that you can also use is applying pressure with your plunger. Place the plunger directly over the sink’s drainage and press down firmly and swiftly. A good plunger will form a watertight seal with the drain which helps ensure that the pressure will be enough to unclog the sink. It is also important to ensure that the type of plunger you use is one that is designed for your sink. You should use the standard cup-style plunger since most sinks are compatible with this style. The plunger applies the physical forces of compression and suction to unclog your sink.


3. Check Your Pipes

This remedy for unclogging your sink is usually used when other remedies have failed. Many of you might think that only your plumber can undertake some of the practical details for unclogging such as checking the pipes under the sink. However, some of these tasks are pretty straightforward and can be done without any external help.

You will notice a pipe that exits your sink and goes into the wall. Sometimes, the clog might be caused by excess materials in this area that have accumulated and cannot be adequately removed by any other means other than removing the pipe and physically removing the clogging.

Depending on the nature of the pipe, you might need a wrench to disconnect it and check if it is indeed clogged. Sometimes you can also simply use your hands to open the pipe, especially plastic pipes that can easily be disconnected by twisting them. Before you try this, run some water through your sink to get rid of any material that might have accumulated on the upper parts of the drain. For the lower parts, you can use a stick or any other thin object to forcefully pull out and eject any materials that might have accumulated.


Whatever solution works for you, it is equally important to remember that prevention is always the best remedy. Therefore, try to avoid any activities that might lead to a clogged sink in the first place. For instance, if you are particularly prone to a clogged kitchen sink, be sure that you can wipe any solid materials from your utensils into the trash bin before rinsing them in the sink.  An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
